Work starts
on Pool Roof.
After the
third theft of lead in 6 months it was decided to look for an alternative
product to replace the lead that has been acting like a magnet to the
thieves who have made life so difficult for us.
After much
research we found a replacement product called Ubiflex that matched our
needs.

Hard to Believe
For the third time in
six months thieves have struck again
Evening Advertiser
Lead thieves strike at pool for a third time
THIEVES have stripped the lead from a charity's
roof - for the third time in six months.
Thamesdown Hydrotherapy Pool in Jefferies Avenue,
Upper Stratton, was targeted again in the early hours of Sunday.
The previous two incidents were in August and
October last year.
Three men managed to remove 60 metres of lead,
which will cost £2,000 to replace, but is covered by insurance.
But it is not the loss of the lead which will hit
the charity hardest.
It is the £10,000 it will have to find for barbed
wire on the inside of the 195m perimeter fence and to beef up CCTV around
the site.
Friends of the Thamesdown Hydrotherapy Pool are
planning to meet the costs of these security measures.
Paul Charlwood, who manages the pool that caters
for people with disabilities, thinks the gang behind the thefts is highly
organised.
"They disconnected light bulbs so the CCTV cameras
could not function without a source of light," he said.
"I think this was well thought out and well
planned.
"We just can't believe this has happened again and
we are very angry.
"It's so frustrating and is difficult not to take
personally.
"If it happened once you may shrug your shoulders
and think these things happen.
"But three times in six months is hard to take.
"We should be concentrating on spending money on
aids inside the building, not what's outside.
"They have to be the lowest of life to do things
like this to us.
"I'm amazed how far they will go for a profit.
"We're sorry if the fencing offends anyone but we
now have to do all we can to protect ourselves.
"I hope these people are brought to justice."
After the thieves had gained access to the roof
they ripped off the lead and threw it over the building's fence.
Then they threw the centre's wheelie bin over the
fence and filled it with the stripped lead, before driving off.
The pool remains open despite the theft.
Every week the 92F warm water facility, which
opened in 1979, is used by 700 people.
Some of those who use it have brain damage while
other users include those with cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.
Scene of crime officers were at the site yesterday
to investigate the incident.
A torch and fingerprints on a gas pipe were found
on the roof and could offer police further lines of inquiry.
Acting Inspector Adrian Davis of Swindon police
said: "This is a local facility for the local area and we would urge any
members of the public to contact us with information on this.
"We are continuing to investigate this theft."

THIEVES STRIKE AGAIN
Once again we have been
targeted by heartless thieves, who have stolen more lead off the roof of the
pool during the early hors of 10th October. They have taken almost 40
meters of lead flashing. In a report in the Swindon Evening Advertiser, pool
manager, Paul Charlwood said "The cost of replacing the lead will be £1,000
- £1,500. Add to that £2,500 it cost on the previous occasion. " "It
also changes the emphasis of what runners are raising money for at this
weekends, instead of raising money for children's swimming aids and
replacement shower chairs, it has to be directed to security and getting the
roof back up to scratch." Anyone with information on the theft should call
Swindon Police on 0845 4087000.
LEAD STOLEN FROM
HYDROTHERAPY POOL ROOF
We are sorry to have to
announce that Association have been the victims of a callous and mindless
theft of lead from the roof of the Hydrotherapy Pool. Thieves struck in the
early hours of 23rd August stealing more than 50 metres of lead
flashing from the roof of the pool.

This mindless & selfish
act has meant that money earmarked for use to benefit pool users is having
to be diverted on additional security measures. Although insurance will
cover part of the cost, the Association will have to cover the excess and
security upgrade.
The additional cost will
be around £3,500.

Pump Upgrade Project

Thanks to the awarding of a grant of £5,563 from the Big
Lottery Fund, Awards for All (Lottery Grants for Local Groups) the pool was
able to upgrade the 27 year old single pump system over the Christmas/New
Year Period.

The work was carried out Ken Cattell & Peter Foster aided
and abetted by pool manager Paul Charlwood. The Association really
appreciate that Ken & Pete worked over the holiday period to ensure pool
users would experience the least amount of disruption.
By having two pumps we can have a regular
maintenance programme without any loss of pool time, and in the event of one
pump failing we can just switch over and keep operating.
Garden
of Rremembrance
Now work has finished on the
garden and it has established itself I am sure
you will agree that Andy Garrett’s imaginative
design and planting scheme has been
in keeping with what we are trying to achieve. Funds
have allowed
us to provide a bench and
is dedicated to the memory of Lizzie Hunt.
Planting did not start until March/April giving
the plants a fighting chance to establish before their first winter. I know I speak for many users that this will
be a special place like the people it is designed to honour.
If you wish to contribute or would like further information please contact
me at the pool.

a few photograph's showing how the garden progressed through its various
stages to completion
