A Bit About Our History

The pool was opened in 1979 and is a unique purpose-built facility available to any individual with a disability whether that disability is permanent or temporary. Every week the pool averages 700 users. Since 1979 the pool has been open and has been used over 750,000 times.

The Len Lee Suite opened in September 2002, thanks to donations from the National Lottery, the Big Give and many others and costing £300,000.

The suite added a further two changing rooms and two high dependency private changing rooms, all connected by an overhead hoist movement system, one of the largest in the South of England, which can take users to showers, toilets and directly into the pool. Four adjustable changing beds were also made available, two fitted with showers.

The pool was managed for over 30 years by Mr. Paul Charlwood. Over this period Paul would have overseen the progression and development of this unique facility. So much so he earned the name Mr. Hydrotherapy. Paul retired in 2010 and handed over the reigns to Mr. Neil Montgomery.

The pool is now managed by Mr. Neil Montgomery, with assistant manager Mrs. Jan Platt, who has been with the pool since it opened in 1979. Two pool assistants make up the ‘Team’ at the pool, all staff are qualified in First Aid and life saving.
